Winter load increases for South zone Minnesota's Department of Transportation announced that a winter load increase will take effect in southern Minnesota on Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 at 12:01 a.m. Winter load increases for northern Minnesota continue to be in effect. Under state law enacted last year, Mn/DOT uses a three-day forecast to predict when freezing temperatures will ensure adequate pavement strength to allow trucks to carry loads in excess of 10 percent over the normal legal gross vehicle weight. A winter weight permit is required to take advantage of the weight increase on Interstate highways. Load increases are permitted each winter when freezing temperatures cause frost to penetrate in to the pavement foundation. Winter load increases will remain in effect through January and are not affected by temporary thaws during this period. The south zone extends to the Iowa border from a line from MN 61 to 1-35 in Duluth, west to MN 210, west to US 10 west to the Minnesota- North Dakota border at Moorhead. End dates for load increases are determined by weather. Vehicle operators are required to check with Mn/DOT for exact start and end dates. All changes arc made with a three-day notice. Information on winter load increases can be found on Mn/DOT's website at www.mn.dot.state.mn.us/research/sea sonal load limits/thawindex/SLR map contacts.asp.
