Harley likes being his own boss and the freedom of farming. On the other hand, things being out of his hands worry him. Ellie teaches kindergarten at James Knoll Elementary School in Ortonville to support Harley's farming habit. She's taught there for six years, but has worked for Ortonville schools for ten years. She also teaches band in Big Stone City, SD, part time. Kaylee happens to be in her mom's kindergarten class. Ellie said it works out since she teaches kindergarten and not a higher grade where grades are given out. "If I taught a higher grade, I probably wouldn't teach my own kid because the other kids might think she gets preferential treatment," Ellie said. "You work and farm and do things with the community it seems like I'm always so busy, so I thought this might be a good way to spend some more time with her." When Kaylee first started kindergarten with her mom, she kept calling Ellie mommy, so Ellie told her she had to call her teacher or Mrs. Helgeson in school. "She fixed it at school, but when she came home, she kept calling me Mrs. Helgeson," Ellie said laughing. "We finally got that under control halfway through the year." Ellie plays trumpet in the Tri State Band. She is also president of the St.. John's Catholic Church council. The two are in co-ed volleyball in the winter. Harley hunts, likes going to horse and trail rides. He helps with elementary wrestling, is on the Odessa town board, and is a member of the JayCees. FEEDING TIME!
