Rueter to speak at regi workshop on youth dep Youth in rural communities of southwest Minnesota are not immune to severe depression and suicide. At a November workshop at the U of MN SW Research and Outreach Center/Lamberton, area professionals shared, "We had a suicide in a high school (rural SW MN high school) late in the school year...The big ques- tion is could something have prevent- ed this?" and "The pressure that I see the youth dealing with today is so overpowering. I work with many youth who have been diagnosed with depression and am sure there are just as many going undiagnosed and try- ing to deal by themselves." A research project conducted by Dr. Martha Rueter, University of MN Assistant Professor, indicates a lifetime rate of psychiatric disorders among rural adolescents at 51 percent. These dis- orders include major depression, anx- iety disorders, behavior disorders and alcohol disorders. In a separate study by the U of MN, between six and eight percent of all high school stu- dents surveyed indicated they were severely depressed. On March 22, ConnectU will offer a regional workshop, Youth Depression: Working with Families and Communities for professionals and individuals working with families and youth. Dr. Rueter will share data that shows youth depression is a con- cern for every community and will discuss how working with families is critical to addressing this concern.
