Extension report Carrie Ann Olson Coun Extension Educator 839-2518 or 1-800-279-2518 TEENS: HAVE A BUDGET - EVEN FOR THE PROM! The prom may be a big-time social occasion for some teens, but it can also be a "crash course" in money management. Just to make the btg night happen, young people need to determine their goals, devise a budget, save their money, and comparison shop. It may sound complicated, but it really is not. A budget paints a very accurate picture of exactly where a person is financially; helps avoid problems; and turns goals into realities. Shirley Anderson-Porisch. /.yon County Extension Educator, provides the following thoughts about prom and budgeting. Prom expenses usually total several hundred dollars so deciding priorities and allocating money through a budget is essential in most families, even if students are spending their own money. Consider the line items for the prom expense budget - dress/tuxedo; clothing accessories; hair/nails; flowers; transportation; photos; prom tickets; food; as well as pre and post prom activities. Are there any categories missing? Parents can play a role in helping their teens learn the budgeting process by identifying their short and long term goals; determining expenses; establishing priorities; and gathering all of the necessary information to set up a plan that really works. Parents can help their children master their future by helping them live within a budget - jot down plans, keep track of spending and save money on a monthly basis.
