Editorial comment GUEST EDITORIAL... Who is Smarter- Hollywood or the (Edi. note: We received a request to print the following from former resident and long-time reader, retired FB! agent Myron Scholberg) By Cindy Osborne The Hollywood group is at it again. Holding anti-war rallies, screaming about the Bush Administration, running ads in major newspapers, defaming the President and his Cabinet every chance theyget, to anyone and everyone who will listen. They publicly defile them and call them names like "stupid", "morons", and "idiots". Jessica Lange want so far as to tell a crowd in Spain that she hates President Bush and is embarrassed to be an American. So, just how ignorant are these people who are running the country? Let's look at the biographies of these "stupid", "ignorant", "moronic" leaders, and then at the celebrities who are castigating them. President George W. Bush: Received a Bachelor's Degree from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He served as an F-102 pilot for the Texas Air National Guard. He began his career in the oil and gas business in Midland in 1975 and worked in the energy industry until 1986. He was elected Governor on November 8, 1994, with 53.5 percent of the vote. In a historic re-election victory, he became the first Texas Governor to be elected to consecutive four-year terms on November 3, 1998 winning 68.6 percent of the vote. Vice President Dick Cheney earned a B.A. in 1965 and a M.A. in 1966 both in political science. Two years later, he won an American Political Science Association congressional fellowship. In his travels as Vice President, he has seen first hand the great demands the war on terrorism is placing on the men and women of our military, and he is proud of the tremendous job they are doing for the United States of America. Secretary of State Colin Powell was educated in the New York City public schools, graduating from the City College of New York (CCNY), where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in geology. Secretary Powell is the recipient of numerous U.S. and foreign military awards and decorations. Secretary Powell's civilian awards include two Presidential Medals of Freedom, the President's Citizens Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Secretary of State Distinguished Service Medal, and the Secretary of Energy Distinguished Service Medal. U.S. Navy (1954-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld: attended Prinston University on Scholarship (AB, 1954) and served in the 57) as a Naval aviator. Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge was raised in a working class family in veterans' public housing in Erie. He earned a scholarship to Harvard, graduating with honors in 1967. After his first year at The Dickinson School of Law, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as an infantry staff sergeant in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star for Valor. National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice earned her Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Gum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Denver in 1974; her Master's from the University of Noffe Dame in 1975; and her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver in 1981. (Note: Rice enrolled at the University of Denver at the age of 15, graduating at 19 with a Bachelor's Degree in and no one knows quite why, the Hollywood elitists detest Conservative views and anything that supports or uplifts the United State of America. The silence was deafening from the Left when Bill Clinton bombed a pharmaceutical factory outside of Khartoum, or when he attacked the Bosnian Serbs in 1995 and 1999. He bombed Serbia itself to get Slobodan Milosevic out of Kosovo, and not a single peace rally was held. When our Rangers were ambushed in Somalia and 18 young American lives were lost, not a peep was heard from Hollywood. Yet- now, after our nation has been attacked on its own soil, after 3,000 Americans were killed by freedom-hating terrorists while going about their routine lives, they want to hold rallies against the war. Why the change? Because an honest, God-fearing Republican sits in the White House. Another irony is that in 1987, when Ronald Reagan was in office, the Hollywood group aligned themselves with disarmament groups like SANE, FREEZE and PEACE ACTION, urging our own government to disarm and freeze the manufacturing of any further nuclear weapons, in order to promote world peace. It is curious. that now, even after we have heard all the evidence that Saddam Hussein has chemical, biological and is very close to obtaining nuclear weapons, there is no cry from this. group for HIM to disarm. They believe we should leave him alone in his quest for these weapons of mass destruction, even though it is certain that these deadly weapons will eventually be used against us in our own cities. So why the hype out of Hollywood? Could these celebrities believe that since they draw such astronomical salaries, they are entitled to also determine the course of our Nation? That they can make viable decisions Did you know athletes are very prone to back and neck injuries? That's why our chiropractic clinic works with many world-class athletes to help relieve muscular pain, stiff joints and pinched nerves. We use gentle adjustments and soothing massage techniques to effectively treat our clients. And we'lll counsel you on the right nutrition, exercise and stress management to keep you healthy. They are privy to information gathered around the World concerning the Middle East, the threats to America, the intentions of terrorists, and terrorist-supporting governments. They are in constant communication with the CIA, the FBI, Interpol, NATO, The United Nations, our own military, and that of our allies around the world. We cannot simply believe that we have full knowledge of the threats because we watch CNN!! We cannot believe that we are in any way as informed as our ie'adet;s. ' These celebrities have no intelligence-gathering agents, no fact-finding groups, no insight into the minds of those who would destroy our country. They only have a deep seated hatred for all things Republican. By nature, concerning war and peace? The ultimate irony is that many of these celebrities have made a shambles of their own lives, with drug abuse, alcoholism, numerous marriages and divorces, scrapes with the law, publicized temper tantrums, etc. How dare they pretend to know what is best for an entire nation! What is even more bizarre is how many people in this country will listen and accept their views, simply because they liked them in a certain movie, or have fond memories of an old television sitcom! It is time for us, as citizens of the United States, to educate ourselves about the world around us. If future generations are going to enjoy the freedoms that our forefathers bequeathed us, if they are ever to know peace in their own country and their world, to live without fear of terrorism striking in their own cities, we must assure that this nation remains strong. We must make certain that those who would destroy us are made aware of the • severe consequences that will befall them. Yes, it is a wonderful dream to sit down with dictators and terrorists and join hands, singing Cumbaya and talking of world peace. But it is not real. We did not stop Adolf Hitler from taking over the entire continent of Europe by simply talking to him. We sent our best and brightest, with the strength and determination that this country is known for, and defeated the Nazi regime. President John E Kennedy did not stop the Soviet ships from unloading their nuclear missiles in Cuba in 1962 with mere words. He stopped them with action, and threat of immediate war if the ships did not turn around. We did not end the Cold War with conferences. It ended with the strong belief of President Ronald Reagan... George P. Werner D.D. [Edi. note: Following is one of a series of articles by the late son of an Evangelical minister who moved his family to Odessa from Minneapolis, living there from 1931 to 1934. Your're reading his memories of life in a small Minnesota town as written to his granddaughter Ehssa Kiskaddon. The author was born in t917 in Sleepy Eye and lived in Blue Earth and Minneapolis before moving to Odessa. One of his classmates in Odessa was Rev. Dr. Ihno )anssen, now retired in Walnut Creek, Cal. Some of the memories are from when the author was a volunteer in mission on the island of Sumatra. Rev. Werner passed away late in the year 2000. ***** Tales from Odessa... "THE GOPHER IN THE WELL" (continued from last week) But this is not the end of this sorry tale. The gopher species took a sweet revenge on this callow youth. We had in our back yard a well for our drink- ing water. Odessa was not blessed with municipal water and sewer ser- vice. Behind each house there were tow very necessary features, one a pump and well, and the other euphemistically called "the out- house." At any season of the year it was not a pleasant experience to use either of the two facilities, but in the winter, facing the wintry blasts of icy cold winds, it was pure torture. Of course it was practical to posi- tion the well as far from the outhouse and still remain within the perimeter of the yard as was possible. So it was "a fair piece," a goodly walk from the house to either the well or the out- house. I had been assigned a number of daily household tasks, in addition to riding my long paper route out to the main highway when the bus from the Twin Cities passed on its way to Ortonville. There was no negotiating these drudgery jobs - like walking to a nearby farm to get a tin pail of milk fresh from the milking - they were laid down like the Metes and the Persians' system of laws and legal codes carved in stone. One hot summer day when the sun beat down with intense ferocity and the earth was baked hard and dry. l went out with my water bucket to pump the handle of the old well and bring in the day's supply of drinking water. For several days my father and mother had noticed, and remarked, that the water tasted different now. We thought little of this because in Minnesota anything can happen - and usually does. The color of the water was not as clear as formerly and there was a distinct odor to it. I decided to investi ate. So ! removed a few of the old decaying boards on which the pump was set and looked down he shallow well to the water below. It was not hard to detect that some object was floating on the surface of the water. So I went to our garage (that was more like a small barn), got another pail and some rope and went fishing for that floating object. Before long t had snared it in my pail and pulled the rope and pail up to the ground. A very dead, decaying gopher floated about in my pail 1 called my father to see what had ben in our well - not a pretty sight. Only one solution remained to solve our drinking water predicament. Little George had to walk over to the neighbor's back yard and use their pump. No fun, this, even though two school teachers boarded there. Our well had been a makeshift affair and it would never have passed inspection by the health department, which was unheard of in Odessa. Some makeshift repairs were made to the well by the church, but for many weeks I trudged over to the neigh- bor's yard for clean water. It says in "The Good Book" that "vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord," but in this sad tale it seems to me that vengeance was exacted by a much weaker creature than the Almighty God. How fitting it was that it was not a badger in our well or a civet cat or rabbit, but a little golden gopher whose cousin, or even his brother or father had been ruthlessly slain by this uncaring and unthinking young man.It was stern justice being visited upon one who had destroyed one of God's creatures, small and innocent, who had harmed no one and who had been sacrificed on the altar of man's inhumanity and destructiveness. There was an element of mercy injected into this gopher story. Our family survived our gopher tainted drinking water days. To my knowl- edge none of us got sick from drink- ing this gopher cocktail. Letters to the editor You've heard of the Profile of Learning. It has been a costly and destructive education experiment on our kids. Parents, teachers and stu- dents have found it to be a nightmare. Earlier this year, the House passed a Profile repeal almost unanimously. The Governor has agreed to sign this repeal, and replace- ment standards are being presented to the legislature. Yet, after five years of defending and promoting the Profile failure, the Senate DFL still won't repeal them. On March 27th, DFLers in the Senate again voted to reject the repeal of the Profile of Learning. Senator Jim Vickerman could have cast the decid- ing vote to eliminate the Profile of Learning, but instead, because of Senator Vickerman, the Profile remains. Senate DFLers are hiding behind a fraudulent repeal sponsored by Sen. Steve Kelley. They say the Kelley bill repeals the Profile. It does not. It builds on the Profile. It "revises," but does not replace the offensive process and content of the Profile of Learning. If the Senate DFL doesn't want to repeal the Profile, they should be hon- est and say so instead of promoting their Profile clone as a repeal. There will be more Profile votes in the Senate. If you want knowledge- based, academic achievement stan- dards in our schools, if you want to get rid of the Profile experiment on our kids, call Senator Vickerman and urge him to vote YES to the true House Profile repeal and NO to the phony Kelley bill.
