TKe -";':" naer n se ".t nt in your Y-feart ( i By Dennis Justison iI' In Luke's Gospel, Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talk2 "~ ing about!' At that moment, while he was Still speaking, the cock crowed. The Lord turned and looked at Peter. ,Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord how He had said to him, Before the cock crows toda , ou , YY,: .~ i will three times.' And he went out and l deny me wept bitterly." . I have been on retreats as people shared things they regret. Maybe they cheated on their wife, wished they would have been more kind to their husbands, or did something awful to a friend. Whatever the cir- cumstance, it is hard to look at yourself and know in your heart that what you did was wrong. "I hurt someone." It causes us to weep And of course, we all know better, don't we? We are supposed to love people and use things. Sometimes, we get it backwards. In the Apostle John's first letter. 2:15-17. hegives us one reason why we do that: we fall in love with the systems of the world. We indulge our bodily desires and those of our eyes. We take pride in our possessions. This is like the temptation scene of Jesus in the gospels: We are blinded by the desire for power, possessions, prestige, and pleasure. The best place to hide our disordered desires is religion and church. Many of us are good at it and even claim we don't have a religion. Yet: we diligently follow the rules, our rules, the ones visible on the outside anyway. We avoid looking Jesus in the eye and we run. We are still run- ning. Running where? Why? We don't know. As we grow in stature within our group or church, we probably start i pointing fingers at other people, especially the notorious sinners (from the perspective of our group). We feel justified, holy even! It feels good to cast out the sinners and tell the false religions that they are going to hell. We feel we're helping when we pin the responsibility for the latest earth- quake or someone's cancer on another's sin. The problem with this kind of behavior is that it isn't Christ. Yet. at some level, we all dolt don't we'?. One personal example is that I love to pray a daily rosary. For thirty minutes. I imagine myself sitting on the Father s tap :like. a child~ M3,~ Mother is there, my brothers and sisters too. We talk about Jesus.. To some. this is evil and I'm going to hell for it. Too often myresponse Js to fight Condemnation with condemnation, fire with fire. Does Jes/~s teach me this? No. this isn't being Christ. I am merely reinforcing a system of pun- ishment and control.
