I Page 14b Spring & Summer 1999 Big Stone Lake Region Vacation Legion Baseball Hall of Fame May Be Built Soon in Milbank Because Milbank is recog- nized as the Birthplace of American Legion Baseball, local Legionnaires have embarked on a tremendous undertaking of trying to establish a national Ameri- can Legion Baseball Hall of Fame here. A resolution asking the National Legion Headquar- ters to authorize fund-rais- ing for the project was endorsed by 41 state depart- mente prior to the 1997 national convention. The resolution is presently under study and local opti- mism is running high for final approval. The large granite monu- ment along U.S. Highway 12 at the east edge of the city was dedicated in 1950, the 25th anniversary of the progran Teams first competed in 1926 with Beresford win- ning the first South Dakota state title. Yonkers, NY, won the first national title, defeating Springfield, OH, in the championship game. The number of boys who have played Legion baseball runs in the millions and .major league rosters have been in past years, and still today, are generously sprin- kled with ex-Legion ball players. Milbank fielded its first team in 1930 and has had a team continuously since that time. The local Birch- Miller Post has hosted sev- eral state playoffs and state tournaments --the last played here was in 1990. State officials have condi- tionally stated that Milbank can host the state champi- onship tournament in the year 2000, the diamond anniversary of the program.
