Trash off day launches statewide anti-litter plan Over 5,000 Adopt-A-Highway volunteer groups will participate in the first annual Trash Off Day on Saturday, May 16, 1998 The statewide event kicks off the Minnesota Department of Transportation's (Mn/DOT) anti-litter program which aims to clean up Minnesota roadsides and raise public awareness of the cost of careless littering. Throughout the summer volunteer groups will pick litter and debris along 12,000 miles of Minnesota roads. Public service announcements will reinforce the message that litter- ing is an expensive, irresponsible behavior that each person can improve. A clean Minnesota wel- comes both visitors and residents: Governor Arne Carlson pro- claimed Saturday, May 16, as Trash Off Day in Minnesota. Commissioner of Transportation James Denn and State Maintenance Engineer Mark Wikelius will join Adopt-A-Highway volunteers at the St. Croix Rest Area at 10:00 am. MnDOT officials and local dignitaries will attend similar events across the state to salute volun- teers and promote the anti-litter theme, "Don't Waste Our State. Lieutenant Governor Joanne Benson promotes anti-litter efforts statewide and said, "I hear from tourists all the time that they will come back to Minnesota because we have friendly people and a clean envi- ronment. The Adopt-A-Highway Program is a great Minnesota tradi- tion. Individual actions make a big difference in our quality of life, and the volunteers who keep our roadsides clean are outstanding citizens." In 1997, Adopt-A-Highway volun- teers picked over 26,000 tons of trash from state roads and interstates. County, city and municipality cleanups netted an additional quantity. Volunteer efforts allow Mn/DOT maintenance workers, represented by AFSCME, to direct extra hours to road projects rather than litter picking. The anti-litter awareness program targets voluntary litterers whose deliberate behavior needs to change in order to reduce the growing litter problem. at's entertainment SPECIAL - All Week COORS LIGHT 16 OZ.
