HOFFMAN IMPLEMENT COMPANY GRACEVILLE, MINNESOTA PHONE 320-748-7277 or MN WATS 1-800-248-0475 May Keeping busy with four boys, crops, a dairy operation and cleaning up after the tornado that blew through their front yard last year is just a way of life for DeRon and Sylvia Brehmer of rural Bellingham. DeRon, who farms three miles south and one mile west of Bellingham, is a second generation farmer. He purchased the place from his father in 1991 after he decided to retire. DeRon attended college in Willmar for farm management, moved home, and from there he and his wife have built the operation up to around 130 head of cattle, with 50-55 milkers. The Brehmer's cows, which pro- duce an average of 77.4 pounds of milk per day, are milked twice daily using an automated pipeline. "Genetics play a large part in milk production," Brehmer says. "We've been using artificial insemination methods along with changes in feed- ing and management in the operation to improve our production." Last year brought harsh weather for the area, and with it came a tornado that passed through the farm. It took three pole sheds with it, and damaged other buildings. DeRon is currently planning to demolish the older build- ings and rebuild them. He has redone his machine shed already. About 75 percent of the Brehmer's operation is dairy, with the rest being 290 acres of alfalfa, corn, soybeans, wheat, pasture land, and "that body of water we just can't seem to get rid of", Brehmer said. Most of the crops go back into the operation as feed for the cows. AN DeRon says to cut down on ero- has sion, he tries to keep the alfalfa land in rotation, and uses light tillage on his other crops for soil conservation. The Brehmers were married in 1982 after DeRon returned from col- lege. They now have three children. Isaac,12, is a sixth grader at the Bellingham Elementary School. Besides sports and school, he hopes to show one of the cows for 4-H in the future. Aaron, 9, is a third grader, Matt, 8, is in first grade, and Jordan, the youngest, is 3 1/2. The family is active in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Walter Township, where DeRon is a member of the church council and Sylvia teaches Sunday the State helps out on Besides of activities DeRon and reading time. DeRon says move back he was where he wanted to This area is where my POSING WITH HIS FAVORITE COW is the Isaac. He hopes to display cattle in 4-H in the future.
