Thirty-five years of coaching pays off for Roger Sandberg For 35 years, Coach Roger state. Until this year, the highest Sandberg has been associated with the boys and girls golf teams at Ortonville High School. "Roger has taken four teams, the 2000, 2001, 2009 and 2010 teams to the state tournament. Sandberg has been coaching golf at OHS for 35 years and this year's te Was the first team in school history to win the State Championship at Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker. a team has finished was third place, which was accomplished with the 2000 and 2001 teams. This year, Coach Sandberg and the OHS golf team captured that elusive State Title. According to Sandberg, this was a team that he thought could be in the top three in the state. "We have had some very good teams and individual golfers," said Sandberg. "Each team has been special, but deep down I thought this team could finish as one of the top three in the state." According to Sandberg, things really began to click when the younger players, Jade Hasslen and James Nitz, began playing good, steady golf. "This team had a lof of depth," said Sandberg. "Good leadership, experience and a team that put in a lot of practice time. The older guys took in the young kids, knowing that they were a key piece of the puzzle." When this year's state tourna- ment ended due to bad weather and Ortonville was announced as this year's state champions, sen- ior Bryn Stock commented how happy the players were for Coach Sandberg. "That was the happiest we had ever seen him," said Stock. "It was great to see him with the medal around his neck and the Championship Trophy in his hands" , : . This year's team was quick tO point out how Coach Sandberg coaches the players. "Coach focuses on teaching young kids on doctoring their own swing," said senior Charlie Stattelman. "He knows a lot about the game and keeps it sim- ple for everyone. As the team was coming back from Pebble Creek in Becker last Thursday, they were greeted by the Ortonville Fire Department and Ortonville Ambulance Service to escort them back into town. Sandberg couldn't help but to think about 1982 when he ,coached the Trojan basketball team in the state tournament. "Yes, there were some flash- backs," said Sandberg. "The kids were joking around, but when they saw the caravan ahead, their eyes got very big. It was a very special moment." A welcome home ceremony was held last Thursday night at the Ortonville School for the Trojan golf team. Coach Sandberg spoke highly of the support shown for the team. "We want to thank the com- munity for all the support shown and for everyone that came out tonight," said Sandberg. "Also to the parents who were always there and for the team, who put in a lot of hard work to win this championship." Coach Sandberg went on to say that this was a fitting end to a good team.
