A trip for ice cream on a hot July day. or the daily glass of milk which helps our children grow up strong, sometimes may be overlooked. It is for this reason that Inside Agriculture profiled the Edwin and LeRoy Goetsch families of rural Bellingham. longtime dairy farmers who have fought the declining popula- tion of small dairy operations. The 1920s barn at the Goetsch farm has been added onto many times, including a pipeline in 1979, and a larger bulk tank three years ago. Edwin and Marilyn, LeRoy's parents, recall using lantern light and hand milking methods, before electricity was brought to the rural areas in the late 1940s. Also, during the harsh winter of 1968-69, Edwin recalls the milk truck from Valley Queen in Mi-lbank, SD, where they had sold milk for many years, having trouble getting to the farm due to the snowy conditions. Just a few years ago, also. during the flooding in 1997, Marilyn adds that was also a tough time for the trucks. LeRoy, who spent two years at vo- tech in Canby for ag production, was head of the fertilizer department at the Nassau Farmers Elevator for seven years before he began farming in 1988. betwee and girls, two months Amia The 3.5 milk LONGTIME DAIRY Bitumi Pav,ng, .... , ,; P.O.
