Cows at the Goetsch farm are bred through artificial insemination tech- niques, which allows them to choose better genetic lines, and the partners calve year-round. Edwin and Marilyn have managed the American Dairy Association malt stand at the Lac qui Parle County Fair for four or five years and Bonnie and LeRoy also take their turn providing malts to fairgoers. One difficulty with being a small dairy producer are the regulations being put on them from many sources, and LeRoy stated the end of the small dairy farmer will most likely come when minimum standards are put on what milk haulers will pick up. "But those milk processers have to remember it was the smaller sized dairy farmers that helped them get started, not the large ones," Edwin adds. Vacation time is difficult when you run your own operation. The family attempts to go to a reunion each sum- mer and to get away for a few long weekends here and there, while neigh- bors do the milking, father fills in for son, or vice versa. Edwin says through all his years, the cows have been good to him and he's thankful for them. "I don't know where I would have been without them," he adds. Bonnie, Edwin and Marilyn.
