You Can Bank On IC" MEMBER FDIC BELLINGHAM, MINNESOTA PHONE (320) 568-2519 June in the last 10 years. Changes to the operation, the retirement of John's father Harvey, and the addition of three children have certainly kept life interesting for the family. Back in 1989, John and his father Harvey ran the operation, which is located one and one half miles east of Bellingham. They farmed the 750 acres and averaged 1000 pigs per year ........... from the farrow to finish operation. Recently, John has started buying his pigs from a farrowing Co-op near Mankato. 'It's less labor and less hands-on work for me, and the results seem to be quite a bit better than before," he said. The pigs come in freshly weaned from the Co-op at about 10 pounds. They are a breed from P.I.C. genetics, which uses some of the best from each breed. John usually has about 750 head on hand at one time, and sells them when they reach 250 pounds. John sells his hogs to the Bellingham Livestock Market and is a member of the Minnesota Pork Producers Association. He is also active locally in the Lac Qui Parle Pork Producers in which he serves as treasurer. "We need to bo constantly updating our hog production practices, as this industry is changing rapidly and we must find our niche within it," John says. John still farms 750 acres, half of which is corn and half beans. He sells most of the crops, and uses conserva- tion tillage to preserve topsoil. He is the third generation on the farm. John's grandfather Anton Plathe moved there in 1922. His father Harvey still helps out there when he gets a chance, and now lives in Bellingham. Mari, eighth of 11 children, also comes from a farm family. Her par- ents Wilfred and Genevieve Adelman were featured as Farmer of the Month back in 1988. They used to farm nine READY TO HEL P( miles south of since moved er now Mari Bellingham on Main. week and also ing to another sage therapist.
