(July 8, 15, 22, 29, Aug. 5, 12, 2003) Pioneerland Libraries will put internet filters in place The Pioneerland Library System will soon be undergoing a change, as a recent legislative decision has required filters for all library comput- ers that have internet access. The decision was made based on concern about inappropriate internet useage in public areas, such as libraries. The American Library Association fought this regulation, claiming that it would infringe on First Amendment rights. The Supreme Court, however, determined that placing these filters would not infringe on legal rights, because it does not deny adults their First Amendment rights. All libraries will be required to place these filters on their internet in order to receive Federal Government funding, including Federal dollars for e-rates, which currently contributes to approximately 40 percent of libraries' telecommunications t+unding. According to John Houlahan, Director of Pioneerland Library Systems, the entire Pioncerland chain will be implementing these filters. Pioneerland is wailing to hear about guidelines regarding implementation of these filters. Once guidelines have been set, Pioneerland officials will look into the costs of applying the filters. "It could be very expensive to do this," said Houlahan, "once we begin putting these filters through all our libraries." Vicki Grimli, Ortonville's Public Librarian, echoes Houlahan's thoughts. "That is the law+ and we will do what the law says," said Grimli, who is currently awaiting word from Pioneerland about how to begin implementing the changes.
