In that situation, one popular nutri- tion initiative may help reach under- served kids. Stephanie Heim, Farm to School coordinator with the University of Minnesota Extension, says research has found when schools become en- gaged in Farm to School programs, school meal participation rates actually increase. "Kids get excited about the local farm-fresh food that's being offered to them. Oftentimes this is paired with ed- ucation and outreach with the students so they learn about where their food comes from and how it was grown. When they feel a connection to their food, they're often more likely to actu- ally eat and taste the food." Heim says Farm to School initia- tives connect schools with local farms to serve healthy meals in school cafe- terias, improve student nutrition, pro- vide health and nutrition education, and support local small farmers in the process. For a rural community, Willmar Public schools serves an increasingly diverse student body, and over half of their pupils are eligible for free or re- duced-price lunches. Annette Hen- drickx-Derouin, director of food and nutrition services, says Farm to School has been a great resource for Latino and Somali students, who make up a third of the district's population. 'They may or may not be familiar with some items that our other students would be, so it's important that we do that nutrition education, and agricul- tural education along with the pro- gram." She says the district takes field trips to a local bison ranch and farm, and has regular educational activities to teach how different food items are grown, and what food products are made from them. Considered a pioneer in the local Farm to School movement, Wiilmar Public Schools have been bringing Io- cally-grown food to student lunch trays since 2004. Hendrickx-Derouin says. they have intentionally started the pro- gram in the early grades. "We primarily focused on our kindergarten through grade five pro- gram, because we felt that if we could impact what those students were eat- ing, then we would have buy-in for the rest of the years they were in our school district." Hendrickx-Derouin says their pro- gram has been sustainable because they incorporate food items the kids will ac- tually eat. The district took a unique, and highly successful, approach to de- ciding what made it on the menu. Chil- dren taste-tested foods ranging from oven-roasted potatoes, to coleslaw, to wild rice blends, and then voted by placing their trays in bins labeled with happy or sad faces. The University of Minnesota Exten- sion offers an online Farm to School toolkit for school districts that includes menu planning, recipes and food safety tips, available at extension.umn.edu BIG STONE COUNTY 4-H MEMBERS will be part of a PBS documentary about the life of Herbert and Dorothy Vogel of New York. Local 4-Hers to be a part of PBS Documentary Film Big Stone County 4-Hers enjoyed a "Day Out of the County" on Tuesday, July 26 in Fargo, ND. Prior to their trip, the Big Stone County Extension Office received and email informing the or- ganizations that during their visit to the Plains Arts Museum, that they would be part of a documentary film being produced. The PBS documentary is about the life of Herbert and Dorothy Vogel. The Vogel's, who are not wealthy people, managed to build a collection of over 40,000 works of art over 45 years. Their tiny New York apartment became so overrun by their collection that they decided to transfer them to the National Museum of Art. From there, the national project, "The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Col- lection: 50 Works for 50 States" was born. North Dakota was one of a few states chosen for the film. Film crews were at the museum filming Big Stone County 4-Hers as they were given a tour of the Vogel's art and the youth were aked questions about the pieces and what they thought the art piece was all about. The PBS documentary filmed plans to air within the United States and Japan in about ayear ....
