She has practiced veterin IAMS pet food traveling around the country. Metissa is optomistic about the future in Big Stone County. By Krecia Leddy, District family farm running, Conservationist Her parents purchased the farm in the 1950's and Being the youngest of ten raised dairy cattle and pigs children, Melissa Nelson, along with hay and grain. Ili has always had an interest m agriculture. That interest led her to attend the Uni- versity of Minnesota and obtain her Animal Science degree, and in 1998 her Doctor of Veterinary Sci- ence Degree. She has prac- ticed veterinary medicine in Willmar and Wahpeton, ND and even practiced as a Public Health Veterinarian for USDA in Long Praire. Her most interesting profes- sion was as a Veterinary Health Liaison for IAMS pet food travelling around the country working at pet health fairs. However, she has always felt the draw to come back home. Melissa is very close to her father and returned home part- t me in 1997 to keep the the 1980's the dairy herd- was sold and most of the current farm was put into conservation programs, namely CRR During veteri- nary school in the mid- 1990% she started her own beef cattle herd while re- searching beef cattle through a research grant with the Minnesota Depart- ment of Ag. She collabo- rated with Dr. Dennis Johnson, a cattle researcher from the Morris Agricul- tural Station. Their resutts were presented at Cornell University.
