Family Living Focus these tips to help you navigate your dual roles of caressive and worker: Learn about company policies. Talk to your human resources department or read your employee handbook to find out about available policies, benefits and services offered to caregivers. Examples include flexible and reduced work hours, workplace education or services, and flexible spending or dependent care accounts. If comfortable, talk to your manager about your situation. Be specific about your needs and requests. Instead of saying, "I might need some time off," say, "My mother needs to see the doctor every week. I've been able to schedule the appointments late every Wednesday afternoon, so I propose that I start work early those days." Get Organized. It is also important to plan ahead and stay organized. Arrange for time off in advance, whenever possible. Schedule time during lunch or breaks to make or receive caregiving related phone calls. Have your family member's medical, financial legal and insurance documents in a safe, accessible place. Also, use an electronic calendar to stay organized and communicate with others. Seek help from others. Find at least two family members or friends who can pitch in to help when you need it. Educate yourself about community resources that you may need in the future. Balancing Work and Caregiving Your mom just called, and she's fallen again. As you try to sort out the details, your eyes spy your lively kids, the dinner burning on the stove, and a briefcase full of work that you need to attack tonight. Sighing, you think, ?How will I ever manage all of this?" Anyone who has experienced the dual roles of employees and caregiving knows that life can be rewarding, but sometimes equally overwhelming. You may find yourself preoccupied with work while at home, and with home issues while at work. The stress involved can leave you emotionally drained and physically exhausted. You are not alone. About 25 million Americans struggle to manage the stress of work responsibilities while caring for an elderly relative. Because it affects so many workers, employers are becoming much more sympathetic to the dual demands faced by caregivers. The most successful solutions will work for both you and your employer. Each employer is different, so use Important ways to help lower cholesterol for heart health Because heart health risks can be modified by diet, eating foods low in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol is important. And, the soluble fiber in oats, known as beta glucan, has been shown to help lower cholesterol. Beta glucan is found in familiar foods such as Cheerios cereal and oatmeal, and helps rid the body of some LDL or "bad" cholesterol. It acts like a sponge in the digestive tract to soak up cholesterol, helping to naturally remove it from the body. Eaten as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, this may reduce the risk of heart disease. Other foods that may actively help lower heart disease risk include certain eaten twice a day with meals for a daily total intake of at least 1.3 grams, also may reduce the risk of heart disease when eaten as part of a heart-healthy diet. "When doctors tell patients they have high cholesterol, they often re- ceive information about the things they cannot or should not eat," says Susan J. Crockett, PhD, RD, FADA and leader of the General Mills Bell Insti- tute. "We think it's important to em- power people with the simple things they can do that may help lower their cholesterol."
