Trooper by: Trooper Tim Rust of the MN State Patrol Tim: Is there a law in Minnesota requiring, ahe rider of a bicycle to ride in the same direction as motor vehicle traffic? I usually ride my bicycle facing traffic because I believe it is safer, which is correct? Minnesota State Statute 169.222 subdivision 1 states: "every person operating a bicycle shall have all the rights and duties applicable to any other vehicle" (except those which cannot reasonably be applied to bicycles). Because a bicycle operated in Minnesota is a vehicle, bicycles are subject to the same traffic laws (when applicable) as motor vehicles. On average, between 1991 and 2000 there were about 1300 bicycle crashes involving a motor vehicle each year in Minnesota. As might be expected, most traffic crashes involving a bicycle tend to occur in areas with larger populations. In 2000, only 14% of all bicycle crashes in Minnesota occurred in rural (defined as less than 5,000 people) areas. Bicyclists are supposed to ride with traffic. Bicyclists are also required to stop for stop signs and obey other traffic control devices. Of course there are additional requirements for those riding bicycles in Minnesota such as ridin as close as practical to the curb or edge of a roadway. The most commonly occurring action by bicyclists in Minnesota prior to the crash in 2000 (39% of the time) was attempting to ride across the traffic way. Other significant contributing factors for both the bicyclist and motor Vehicle drivers in 2000 were fail to yield the right of way and driver inattention or distraction. For the bicyclist, other contributing factors to the crashes in 2000 were disregarding a traffic control device and improper/unsafe lane usage. When bicyclists follow the same "rules of the road", drivers of motor vehicles can better anticipate the actions of the bicyclist. Because a bicyclist is usually injured when involved in a crash with a motor vehicle, I use some discretion regarding which roads I ride my bicycle on. For those who like to enjoy their bicycles without much of the worry of motor vehicle traffic, I highly recommend Minnesota's bicycle trail system for a great bicycling experience. If you have any questions concerning traffic related laws, or traffic safety in Minnesota send your questions to Trooper Tim Rust - Minnesota State Patrol at 3725 12th Street North, St. Cloud, MN 56303. 7,femr I0 VO J The Big H to t:P dora the month of November You could win one of {our great road tHi> to ee the Twlr.
