To test that premise, Wendy and Mark Lange of Milan will be receiving an additional 60 South African Boer goats to enlarge their herd of breeding stock this week. Mark spent his childhood visit- ing and helping his grandfather farm north of Milan. And he and his wife, Wendy, are attracted to the quality of life they find on the land originally settled by Mark's great grandfather in 1918. "We both work off the farm now, but we would like to be able to spend more of our time here, so the challenge has been to find a product that will provide enough profitability to do that," said Wendy. Wendy and Mark chose goats after they took classes through the Land Stewardship Project's Farm Beginnings program to help search out something that might enable them to reach that goal. One key element of the program for the Langes was a brainstorm- ing session with others in their class. "We heard a lot of different ideas. It gave us a different per- spective and a little more courage to try something that looked like wanted, and to enjoy the place they live. It may come as a surprise to traditional beef and pork eaters, but there really is a market for goat meat The U.S. is currently an importer of goat meat, in large part due to the growing popula- tion from African countries. In fact, goat is eaten in many parts of the world, from Latin America, in some Asian counties and many parts of Africa. Goats can be sold to the stock- yards, but the Langes hope to research the direct market. They'll L WENDY AND MARK LANGE spend more time on the farm. find a local USD/ er and be able to to communities know how to Rumor has eat almost say that's not do seem to Langes have a goat or two t0 ously For been placed on Big spurge.
