One quote of hers that I apply to marriage and growth within marriage is, "The cross is the bed upon which Christ consummates His love affair with His bride." Marriage hasn't failed as an institution. We have failed marriage. While I don't advocate anyone staying in a marriage that causes harm (physical, emotional, spiritual etc.), we must admit we often give up too quickly. We forfeit spiritual progress and personal growth. St. Therese says, "Everything is a grace; everything is the direct effect of our Father's love - difficulties, contradictions, humiliations, all the soul's miseries, her burdens, her needs - everything, because through them, she learns humility, realizes her weakness. Everything is a grace because everything is God's gift. Whatever be the character of life or its unexpected events - to the heart that loves, all is well. What happens to us in life matters. We are changed by the things that happen, but do we filter these events through eyes of pride and become bitter or do we see with humility, seeking wisdom? Some advice from Therese is, "Be not justices of peace, but angels of peace." We tend to enforce peace through power or violence. That doesn't work in the political sphere nor does it work at home. True peace de- mands calm, sacrifice, waiting, and listening. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, whom St. Therese deeply influenced, had this to say, "A sacrifice to be real must cost, must hurt, must empty our- selves. The fruit of silence is prayer, the fruit of prayer is faith, the fruit of faith is love, the fruit of love is service, and the fruit of service is peace." Speaking to husbands in the 4th Century, St. John Chrysostom said, "Even though you suffer everything on her account, do not scold her; for neither did Christ do this to the Church." A husband complained to him that his wife did not love him. The saint replied; "Go home and love her." "But you don't understand," said the husband. "How can I love her when she doesn't love me?" "Go home and love her," John repeated. "Let no one complain about his spouse for no one has a wife like the Messiah." The meaning of course is that we are that wife: Christ's Bride is His followers. How do we treat Him? How does He respond? This is our model in love. It involves becoming empty, like Christ on the cross. It is laying aside our selfishness so the two can become one. The goal of the Christian life is to become more like Christ. These words easily come off our tongues. The reality of living them is far more difficult. They involve true love, love that is action, and not just emotion. St. Maximus the Confessor said in the 7th Century, "Theology without action is the theology of demons." Action means the rubber must hit the road. Action reveals what we truly believe. If I truly believe that I am the head of my household I will consum- mate my love for my wife on a cross. I will lay down my life for her. But this sacrifice and cross is not a burden, but rather a joy and peace that can y come through knowing Christ and living Christ. Marriage mea!j~ t we do this together for the other. 9 By Vicki Grimli The Ortonville Public Library is open Monday-Thursday 11-7 p.m., Friday 12-5 p.m. and Saturday 10- 3 p.m. Make sure to come to the Technol- ogy Class Thursday evening Dec.r 1 at 6 p.m. to learn more about Smart Phones. man to pull off the perfect crime.
