Jones honored with special French medal Ortonville's Charles Jones was honored last week by the French gov- ernment with the Jubilee of Liberty medal in appreciation of those sol- diers who fought on the Normandy Beaches during World War II. The award was presented at Ortonville's VFW Clubrooms. Also honored with the same medal from this area was Alvin "Shorty" Jorgenson of Bellingham, featured elsewhere this issue. The Jubilee of Liberty Medal was authorized by the Regional Council of Normandy to pay tribute to the Men and Women who fought in Normandy to restore freedom to the French peo- ple. Originally these Medals were minted by the Monnaie de Paris and were presented only to those veterans who went back to Normandy for the 50th Anniversary of the D-Day land- ings. The Governor of the Normandy Region has authorized that the Medal of the Jubilee of Liberty may now be presented to any Normandy veteran who was part of the invasion between June 6, 1944 and Aug. 31, 1944. He has requested that the Medal be pre- sented in person and at an appropriate ceremony. The Jubilee of Liberty Medal rep- resents Normandy. On the front, "'OVERLORD 6 Juin 1944"' is inscribed on the upper part. with the flags of the Allied Countries and the names of the landing beaches on the face of the Medal. On the reverse side of the Medal is the Torch of Freedom surrounded by the device of William the Conqueror "Diex Aie': (God is with us). HONOR TO JONES FROM FRANCE.
